Announcement - Seeking Publication Editors

The California Council for the Social Studies is seeking qualified editors for the Social Studies Review (SSR) *FILLED* and Occasional Papers (OP). The SSR is published annually, and is the official journal of the California Council for the Social Studies offering cutting edge commentary and ideas for classroom teachers, curriculum consultants, and college/university educators. Click here to review a copy of the SSR. The OP is published 2-3 times a year with a focus on important topics, ideas, and practices to enhance social studies education. Both publications are peer-reviewed, research-based, and published as print-ready documents for use in K-12 classrooms, pre-service training, and professional development settings. 

General Qualifications

  • College faculty member
  • Experience with social studies education
  • Experience with digital media, such as InDesign and other desktop publishing platforms
  • Time and ability to fulfill the duties of the position

General Description of Duties

  • Identify guest editors/authors and provide leadership and guidance throughout the publication process
  • Review submitted articles from each guest editor/author
  • Serve as a member of the Publication and Technology Committee; attend one mandatory meeting per year
  • Provide suggestions for issue themes and topics of interest
  • Identify, recruit, and communicate with select reviewers
  • Edit and provide feedback to guest editors/authors
  • Edit final copy and conduct final review of the publication
  • Create layout and design the issue; including table of contents, cover, ads, etc.
  • Work closely with and convey final copy to CCSS leadership for distribution
The SSR and OP editor positions offer annual independent contracts with stipends paid upon completion of agreed upon publication schedule.
