2018 California Gubernatorial Candidates' Forum

Highlighting the 2018 California Council for the Social Studies Annual Conference will be an exciting, live, in-person forum featuring the leading gubernatorial candidates. These candidates competing for the seat of Governor of California will  be discussing their platforms and positions on one of the three most important issues to the majority of Californians – education. They will be focusing on social studies education and civic learning in particular, along with other important issues regarding the future of California. Matthew T. Hall, Editorial and Opinion Director of The San Diego Union-Tribune, will moderate the forum.  Candidates will field questions from a panel of journalists that includes:  Chris Reed, San Diego Union-Tribune Deputy Editorial and Opinion Editor; Michael Smolens, Columnist from The San Diego Union-Tribune; and ABC 10News Anchor, Lindsey Peña.

To date, the majority of leading candidates have confirmed their attendance including:

Travis Allen (Republican)
Member, California State Assembly


John Chiang (Democrat)
California State Treasurer 


John Cox (Republican)
Business Executive


Delaine Eastin (Democrat)
Former State Superintendent of Public Instruction


Antonio Villaraigosa (Democrat)
Former Mayor, City of Los Angeles


Parking Instructions:
Parking will be $12.00 per day for hotel guests and $4.00 per hour for local guests driving in, not to exceed $12.00. Parking is located off Fashion Valley Road behind the hotel tower. Guests will take a ticket and mention the group they are with while departing to get the discounted rate. Overflow parking is also located off Fashion Valley Road behind the trolley station, if needed.
