DIVERSITY AND SOCIAL JUSTICE AWARDS PROGRAM
Dear Social Studies Advocate,
As the chair for the California Council for Social Studies Committee for Diversity and Social Justice, my committee and I are proud to announce the 2018 awards for Diversity and Social Justice. Now more than ever, it is important for us to recognize those who have had the courage and compassion to stand up for our most vulnerable students and been role models for their students and their schools by being leaders in advocating for issues impacting women, LGBTQ community, Native Americans, African Americans, Asian Americans, Latinos, immigrants, disabled people and people of diverse religious, socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds.
There is one educator award for K-16 educators and one student award that can be offered to up to nine candidates.
This is the first time CCSS will give the Champions for Diversity and Social Justice Award to K-12 students for their work promoting social justice and diversity in their schools and communities. Up to three student winners will be identified -- one elementary, one middle and one high school student -- for each California region (North, Central and South), for a total of 9 student winners. Each student winner will receive an Amazon gift card, a plaque, and recognition at the CCSS conference in San Diego on March 23-25, 2018. The application materials are included at the bottom of this web page.
The CCSS Educator Award for Diversity and Social Justice is open to educators in elementary, middle, high schools and at the university and college level who have advocated for women, the LGBTQ community, Native Americans, African Americans, Asian Americans, Latinos, immigrants, disabled people, and people of diverse religious, socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds in their classrooms and their communities. The educator award winner will honored with a cash award and a plaque at the CCSS Annual Conference Awards Banquet in San Diego on March 24, 2018. The winner will also have the opportunity to share a model lesson plan at the Diversity and Social Justice Committee Meeting on March 24 at 3:00 PM.
The deadline for both the student and educator awards is Sunday, February 18, 2018. Both applications and are attached below. All materials may be submitted to firstname.lastname@example.org whereupon members of the CCSS Committee for Diversity and Social Justice will review the applications and choose the winners. Please feel free to forward a link to this page to any student or educator you think would be interested in these awards.
